License & Commercial Support
Brand Schema is published under the Apache License 2.0. Anyone may implement, fetch, and serve Brand Cards — including inside a commercial product — with no additional SchemaFirst license and no fee.
There is no spec tax. Adopting the standard never requires a contract with SchemaFirst. The only thing that stays with SchemaFirst is the trademarks: SchemaFirst and Brand Card.
What the Apache 2.0 license gives you
Free for everyone, including commercial use. No license request, no usage reporting.
- Implement the standard in any product, open source or commercial
- Fetch, parse, and serve Brand Cards at scale
- Embed the schemas and machine-readable files in commercial software
- Modify, extend, and redistribute under the Apache 2.0 terms
- Use it inside a for-profit product or service — no revenue threshold, no call volume limit
Trademarks
The Apache 2.0 license covers the standard and its machine-readable files — not the names. SchemaFirst and Brand Cardare trademarks of SchemaFirst.org. You may state that your product implements Brand Schema or reads a Brand Card, but don't use the marks in a way that implies endorsement or that your product is the official standard.
Optional products & services
SchemaFirst offers commercial products and services around the standard. They are entirely optional and separate from the license — you never need them to adopt Brand Schema.
Hosting & validation
Optional SchemaFirst products that host, validate, and monitor Brand Cards. Convenience, not a requirement — the standard works without them.
Implementation & advisory
Hands-on help adopting Brand Schema across your systems, plus training and workshops for teams and agencies.
